ONE ROOM CHALLENGE SPRING 2017 // WEEK ONE: THE BEFORE SHOTS (#NOJUDGMENT)

YO, ONE ROOM CHALLENGE LOVAHS!

If by chance we're not already homies on Instagram, hiiii! I'm Erica Reitman. I'm a tell-it-like is, smart-mouthed, interior designer who lives in Los Angeles with my husband Greg and our 13-year-old chunky Basset Hound Dudley. I love vintage shopping more than the Kardashians (who I really love a LOT), share super duper easy design hacks and advice, and am committed to helping as many ppl as I can figure out how to kick their house's ass

I'm crazy super duper excited to be participating in the 6-week makeover party that is the One Room Challenge this Spring, and am basically blown away that I was included in such a group of talented, super killer designers and bloggers.

HERE'S SOME BACKGROUND SCOOP

Ok, so we bought a 1955, teeny, tiny MCM post and beam house a couple of years ago, and then renovated the crap out of it before moving in. You can see some of the crazy before and afters in this lil video:

The super duper, way rad thing about our house that totally won us over was that we have a completely separate teenier, tinier little guest house too. We specifically wanted a property with some income earning potential, and so BOOM. We were in as soon as we saw this mamma jamma. We now rent that guest house sucka out on Airbnb like nobody's business, and guess what: we pay our ENTIRE friggin mortgage with it every single month!

So as soon as Linda from Calling it Home asked me to participate this Spring, I knew that there was only one space I should even *think* about making over: the guest house, baby!

Now the guest house was kinda/sorta renovated at one point, though not by us. And TRUTH TIME: I know when I say "guest house" you maybe have visions of tennis courts, and pool houses on the brain. But here's the thing: this space used to be the garage. [CUE RECORD SCRATCH].

When we bought the house, however, it was already sort of, kind of in guest house shape. Ish. There was a full bathroom in there, Saltillo tile floors, french doors, and a washer/dryer. What we did initially was switch up the washer/dryer area to full-on kitchen, and then paint and furnish the rest of the space.

Look, we definitely made it look nice.

And in the year since we have been airbnb'ing, we've become Super Hosts (Airbnb's highest honor!)...so all is going well. But I had mostly furnished the space with vintage pieces and hand-me downs and I really decided that I wanted to up my game this time around.

I want it to feel more like a boutique hotel room...though not at all cold and impersonal. I want it to have ALL the touches you would expect to find in a hotel, but also be a bit cooler with unexpected art, wallpaper etc.  So basically chic hotel room, mixed with with a cool, arty salon vibe. OH, also: I don't really do *much* in the way of color as I'm addicted to neutrals. See exhibit A here:

That's our living room in the main house (again: don't get any grand ideas. Our "main house" is 740sf, yo).

Anyhoo, I def want to take a few more chances in the guest house and go a little bit crazier. I'm stepping out of the box, ppl. And I'm stepping out HARD.

READY TO SEE THE SPACE??

Here's what the joint looks like now:

This is the seating area that you see immediately to your left when you walk in the guest house.

Annnnd, here's the bathroom.

So, yeah. Things are looking fine...a little meh...and a little disjointed right now. I really want the space to feel way more pulled together, intentional, and comfy luxe.

So here's what you can expect around these parts during the One Room Challenge:
